This
is an explanation - step by step how the Nokia Cellphone Composition
was created.
When I had an image to begin with - I used it as template. In Illustrator
I had to draw the outlines of the object (the cellphone) with the
pen tool ().
The lines were easy to create, I drew by hand and not with rectangular
tool, but I had to keep in mind that each side of the cellphone
should be the same to the other (reflective). For the buttons I
created a circle which I manipulated after that to have this shape
- on the left side and the right side they are the same, just flipped
horizontaly, in the center I had to create another shape. For "Nokia"
text I used only strokes.
I
drew each element of the cellphone in a different layer (only
strokes with transparent fill) so after that I could export
my ".ai" file into Photoshop without flattening
the artwork. When I was done with my scratch in Illustrator
I chose: File> Export>Save as type - Photoshop 5.
In
Photoshop I opened the already created .psd document (from Illustrator).
Now I had to order the layers and start filling them with gradients.
By clicking on each layer to select it and after that with the
"magic wand tool" ()
I clicked inside the element, so it would select the transparent
area (and not the stroke/outline). I used the gradient tool ()
mostly.
First I filled the blue area (1) with "radial" gradient
- soft light blue in the upper left corner to dark blue. After
that for the same layer I chose: Filter> Add Noise.
2. Light grey (upper right corner) to darker gray with "radial"
gradient.
3. Darker grey (right side) to lighter gray this time with "linear"
gradient.
4. For the buttons I used "radial" gradient and dark
stroke.
5. The screen I filled with green and left the stroke.
The other two buttons in the middle I filled with grey and put
some "Inner Bevel" from the layer styles.
Eeach element is on a different layer.
Now
I had to create some lights and shadows. Usualy I just choose: Layer
> Layer Style > Blending Options > Bevel And Emboss - that's
the easiest way of creating some volume for the objects.
1 and 2. Bevel and Emboss > "Inner Bevel" for these
layers.
3. I add a new layer for the head of the cellphone and filled it
with blue "radial" gradient. I also put some "Noise
effect" for the blue areas.
4. I used "Pillow Emboss" for all buttons.
5. "Inner Bevel" for the screen.
6. "Emboss" for the main centered button.
7. "Inner Bevel" for the ear-phone.
I
continued to add layer styles.
1. I put 1px of "stroke" for these two buttons.
2. Created some dots for the ear-phone.
3. For the screen I created custom lights and shadows: using "pen
tool" ()
I created the shapes and made selection with 1px "feather".
After that I filled with light color for the light and darker for
the shadow.
4. I made another layer for the main buttons again filled it with
radial gradient and chose "Multiply" from the "layer
palette" for the whole layer.
After
I was done with lights and shadows it was time to add the elements.
1. I created some shapes for the symbols using "pen tool"
().
2. "Nokia" text I filled with white color. After that
I put some layer effects:
a) " Bevel and Emboss" - "Outer Bevel" to make
the look of the letters protruding.
b) "Stroke" - dark blue.
3. Again I had to create some custom shapes for the elements inside
the screen. Using "Rectangular Markee tool" ()
I created the rectangles and filled with dark blue.
Finally
I had to put letters and numbers for the buttons which was easy,
all I needed to do is to order them properly for the real look of
the cellphone.
This is the final result.
Once again, this tutorial is not "5 easy steps to make your
dreamed cellphone", because it took me the whole day of hard
and concentrated work, but it is an explanation (to have the idea)
how it was created.
